diabetes detection

Diabetes is detected by measuring the amount of glucose in the blood after a person has fasted (abstained from food) for about eight hours. In some cases, doctors diagnose diabetes by administering a test of oral glucose tolerance test, which measures glucose levels before and after a certain amount of sugar has been ingested.

Another test being developed for type 1 diabetes are looking for specific antibodies (immune system proteins that attack foreign substances) present only in people with diabetes. This test can detect the type 1 diabetes at an early stage, reducing the risk of complications of the disease.

diabetes meilitus

Diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone that helps the body’s tissues absorb glucose (sugar) so it can be used as a source of energy. The condition may also develop if muscle cells, fat and liver do not respond well to insulin. In people with diabetes, glucose levels build up in blood and urine, causing excessive urination, thirst, hunger, and problems with fat and protein metabolism.

Diabetes mellitus differs from the less common diabetes insipidus, which is caused by the lack of the hormone vasopressin that controls the amount of urine secreted.

interventions oriented lifestyle

The main environmental factors that increase the risk of type 2 diabetes are over-nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle, with consequent overweight and obesity.

A minimum weight loss, including 4 kg, often improves hyperglycemia. In the prevention of the disease, a similar loss reduced by up to 60% risk.

A full treatment of diabetes should include a healthy diet (for example, the Mediterranean diet: The main characteristics of this feed are a high consumption of plant products (fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, bread and other cereals) wheat being the staple food, olive oil as main fat, increased consumption of poultry and fish than red meat) and regular moderate physical activity. It is also desirable to eliminate other risk factors when they appear at the same time as hypercholesterolemia.
