With the program “Obeldicks” there has long been an age-Weightloss program for obese children. First study results when tested with 60 children who were on average 11 years old, showed that the success rate 6 months after study entry was 86%.

Obeldicks to help obese children to reduce their long-term weight and have more fun in motion. Unlike weight loss programs for adults, to be achieved in Obeldicks weight loss by the natural growth of children. So the goal is only once a Gewichtsstabilisation, so that the extra pounds to grow gradually. More than 400 children and young people have now participated in Obeldicks and most managed to maintain their weight long term. “The success rate at the end of the training is 71 percent,” says Dr. Thomas Reinher, the initiator of the project. However, the success is measured primarily by whether the participants can apply the long term at home what they have learned in the training: Three years after the training were currently at least 67 percent of all children maintain their weight.

How does Obeldicks?
In Obeldicks meet children aged 4 to 16 years, 6 months of time on dates once or twice a week in the pediatric ward. Meet girls and boys separately in the same age groups at the clinic for half a year together practicing exercise, eating habits, frustration control and nutrition. The parents and families of participating children can get at parents’ evenings and individual advice and tips to help their children. Moreover, there are also parents meetings where stands of experience with cooking recipes, weighing and sport motivation in the foreground. At the beginning of each Obeldicks-course is a thorough medical examination of the child. This possible diseases to be detected lead to obesity. Sometimes seen in this investigation that the cause of obesity is a psychological problem, such as a trauma from violence or abuse experience. In this case, the child is hospitalized before Obeldicks program on the station of the psychosomatic Child and Adolescent Clinic. Obeldicks also the program itself is designed so that the children only for the duration of the training unit must say a few hours of one to two days per week in the hospital.

How can parents be supported by Obeldicks?
Obesity is a health risk that children may carry around their entire lives. The situation itself is stressful not only for the child but also for the parents who often do not know how they can help their child. Slimming groups such as Weight Watchers or powder diets are not suitable for children and very unhealthy. Therefore, the Children’s Hospital has dates in cooperation with the University of Witten / Herdecke nutrition courses designed specifically for children, providing healthy, varied diet as delicious and easy to learn. When cooking together the children are taught a traffic light system for various foods on which they can follow later. The color red stands for unhealthy, fatty and sugary food, while displaying green foods such as fruits and vegetables. Because dietary changes alone will save only half as many pounds, is the movement therapy is another module of Obeldicks. Here the children a new body awareness and self-confidence is to be conveyed so that they can romp and play again at the feel comfortable in their skin. Moreover, the behavioral training, in which the children should learn that one of frustration and boredom can fight differently than with chocolate.

Are diagnosed each year in Spain, 1,100 new cases of diabetes in children and much of it is detected late. Thus, 45% of children between 5 and 10 years who are diagnosed with diabetes also show state of ketoacidosis, a serious complication that is due to a very marked lack of insulin.

To inform the public about the symptoms of diabetes, to help early detection and thus prevent cases of ketoacidosis, especially in children and adolescents, Diabetes Foundation and the Spanish Society of Pediatric Endocrinology with the collaboration of the General Council of Official Colleges of Pharmacists (CGCOF) have launched the campaign “Know the symptoms of Diabetes.” In this, to be held under the World Diabetes Day, celebrated on 14 November, more than 21,500 participating pharmacies throughout Spain.

In order to present this campaign, and studies have highlighted the need for information in this regard, we organized a press conference next Thursday November 11 at 10.30 am in the General Council of Pharmaceutical officers. The meeting was attended by Dr. Beatriz García Cuartero, Service of Endocrinology, Hospital Severo Ochoa, Andoni Lorenzo, father of a child with diabetes, Ana Aliaga, secretary of CGCOF, and M ª Carmen Marín, executive director of the Foundation for Diabetes.

Hyperglycemia was defined as the increase in blood glucose levels. The most common causes are receive less insulin than needed, having consumed more carbohydrates than normal, submitting an infectious disease.

The most common symptoms are intense thirst, need for frequent urination and fatigue. Also headache or abdominal pain, vomiting or cramps in the legs.

Treatment
If after conducting a blood glucose monitoring detected high levels, should be given an extra dose of insulin according to the treatment regimen for each child (see personal card).
If symptoms resulting from this situation (vomiting, malaise) should contact the parents or medical staff.

Hypoglycemia is the decrease in blood glucose levels. In children with diabetes, hypoglycemia is considered a level below 70 mg / dl.

The most common causes:
1. Insulin dose is too high.
2. Excessive physical exercise.
3. Intake of low carbohydrates.
4. Vomiting or severe diarrhea that prevents the absorption of food.
5. Delay in the timing of meals.

Common symptoms (highly variable depending on each child):
* Pale, cold sweat, trembling, hunger or behavior changes (irritability).
* In severe cases, drowsiness with the possibility of loss of consciousness and seizure.

Treatment:
If symptomatic hypoglycemia or glucose <60 mg / dl administer sugar water, fruit juice or other sweetened drinks. Repeat in 10 minutes to control the glucose level has increased.
Once the child is recovered should be given carbohydrate slow absorption.
In severe cases where there is loss of consciousness, do not give the child anything by mouth, and it is necessary to administer a hormone called glucagon prior written consent of the parents / guardians.
Glucose can be injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Any responsible adult (teacher or health) can manage, since it is a simple and immediate treatment but carries no risk to the child.
The dose depends on age and weight of the child, but it is generally recommended half vial in children under 7 years and 1 vial after this age.

Parents should facilitate glucose to school along with medical indications for its administration. Glucose should be kept refrigerated.

Gestational diabetes is a specific disorder that occurs during pregnancy, which is distinguished by an increase in blood glucose, among other conditions, but that after birth the baby and usually disappears during the postpartum period.

This is because during pregnancy the placenta produces hormones such as estrogen, cortisol and lactogen, which can block the work of insulin, which is responsible for regulating blood glucose. When gestational diabetes is not treated, can cause severe consequences on the health of the pregnant woman and baby, one of the most common infections are usually in the urinary tract.

You may also see preeclampsia, which is characterized by increased high blood pressure and a lot of fluid retention which can interfere with the development of the sick baby and the mom. A characteristic of babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes, is that they can grow so much and weigh more than 4 kg which is called (macrosomia), which can complicate delivery, and require much more effort the mother.

You can give these babies born with respiratory failure, poor lung development, which then has for some time in the neonatal intensive care unit until they can breathe on their own. Therefore it is necessary that the mother make the appropriate checks and if you detect gestational diabetes, observed to the letter the instructions of their doctors.

Although type 2 diabetes is a disease most seen in adults, children are not exempt. They too, despite his young age, suffer from this type of diabetes. How can you identify if your child has symptoms of type 2 diabetes and when to take him to the doctor?

Type 2 diabetes in children is partly due to a genetic cause, but also to environmental factors. Diet and lack of exercise contribute to the increase in the rate of type 2 diabetes in children, to the extent considered an epidemic closely linked to obesity.

Like adults, children, is a chronic condition that affects the way we metabolize sugar or glucose. You as a parent you can help prevent diabetes in your children by teaching them to eat healthily, and pointing out the importance of physical activity to maintain a healthy weight. If it is too late and your child suffers from obesity, it is necessary to be alert to signs that may indicate that you have type 2 diabetes.

The first thing to know is that type 2 diabetes in children may develop gradually. This means that not necessarily have symptoms. But other children do have symptoms may include:

* Urinating frequently and be very thirsty. This is because as the sugar or glucose accumulates in the bloodstream of children, the liquids are absorbed by the tissues. This makes the child feel thirsty, drink plenty of fluids and consequently have to go to the bathroom much more often than usual.
* Increased appetite. Without enough insulin to move glucose (sugar) into the cells, organs and muscles are a great lack of energy that is manifested in having very hungry. Sugar is high in the blood but low in the rest of the body.
* Feeling fatigue. This occurs because of the lack of sugar necessary for children to have energy. For this reason they can become irritable and feel tired or fatigued all the time.
* See blurred. When levels of glucose in the blood are too high, the eyes of children can lose fluid that prevent them from focusing properly.
* Having dark patches on the skin. Type 2 diabetes causes some children to have patches of darker skin usually in the armpits and the neck or other body areas where they have folds. This coloration can be a sign of insulin resistance.
* Weight loss. Although the symptoms of diabetes have the children are hungrier and eat too much for calm, they may lose weight because energy is not being stored by the cells and tissues and muscles shrink.
* Frequent or wounds that heal slowly. Type 2 diabetes makes the body of children’s vulnerability to infections and wounds that take longer to heal.

Pay attention, because if your child has these symptoms could have type 2 diabetes. You must go to the doctor for making a series of analysis and establishing the diagnosis. The studies for the detection of type 2 diabetes are also recommended for all children and adolescents who are at high risk of developing it, even without symptoms.

How do you know if your child is at high risk?

* Those who have brothers, dads, grandparents, uncles or cousins who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
* Those who are Hispanic, African American, Native American or Asian. These racial groups are genetically predisposed to type 2 diabetes.
* Children whose body mass index (BMI) exceeds 85%.

Diabetes despite being a chronic, incurable, can be prevented. If your children are at risk, act now. Implements changes in lifestyle and bring them to the doctor to do a blood test to determine whether they are diabetic or not. It’s time to stop this epidemic and have healthy children who become healthy adults.

There are two types of diabetes: juvenile (or type 1 diabetes mellitus) and in adults, obese and pregnant (type 2).

The following symptoms are typical of children and adolescents: pee more often than normal (polyuria) for having increased their urine output, this occurs both day and night, are very thirsty and drink too much water (polydipsia), lose weight even if they have more appetite (polofagia).

At these demonstrations, the pediatrician will order a blood glucose analysis to determine the amount of sugar in the blood. When diabetes, this amount is usually increased and exceeds values of 140 mg / dl, fasting with the child. This is important because, after taking any food, the results can be altered.

Increases blood glucose because the pancreas does not produce insulin, a hormone essential for life. This substance allows the carbohydrates consumed in the diet are deposited as glycogen (the form in which sugars are deposited in our bodies) or used as energy. He also favors the deposition of fat and protein, so when missing or diminished, the patient thinned as it consumes body fat and proteins that serve to support the body.

Children or babies should be administered drugs sometimes a delicate matter, since specific medicine for the little ones, there are hardly any. In severe disease, however, parents have no other choice. A further concern, however, they can adopt: Antibiotics cause to our latest findings of a Danish study, no diabetes.

Taking certain medications in early childhood can be proven to influence the development of the immune system. Antibiotics are considered a potential risk for the development of the flora in the gastrointestinal tract. The gastrointestinal tract has its major influence on the immune system of humans. A type-1 diabetes is triggered, for example by a malfunction of the immune system. Since the question naturally arises: Can cause the administration of antibiotics in young children diabetes?

Danish study says “No”

A team of Danish researchers went to this issue and analyzed the data of more than 606,000 children who were born between 1995 and 2003. In the study many factors were involved. Among them were playing age, sex, place of residence, social situation of the family, maternal age at birth and maturity of the child at birth, a significant role. The antibiotics were arranged in groups, quantity and age of children at time of intake were also considered. Of the 606,000 received the vast majority, around 538,000 children, at least once an antibiotic. On average, each child was about 5 prescriptions of these drugs in his young life. The use of antibiotics in very young children also took place only in cases of absolute needs. These were serious bacterial infections in the renal pelvis, bone marrow, meninges, lungs, or general inflammation in the blood. Boys were the first and second year of life more often than same age girls antibiotics.

Diabetes disease among study children
Of the 606,000 young volunteers, only 454 children suffering from type 1 diabetes. On average, the disease was already at the age of 4.4 years. These children had received antibiotics, but no other than the healthy children. Also, the type and amount of the application or the age at intake was not different from the average. Conclude from the Danish researchers discovered that the antibiotic use in infancy and the development of type-1 diabetes are not related in any way. The study was limited, however, to a period of 9 years and can therefore no conclusions on the possible role of antibiotics in long-term damage in children.
