“Diabetes is the enemy of sexuality.” Santiago said so Cedrés, clinical sexologist Uruguayan was in September at the World Congress of the International Society for Sexual Medicine in South Korea. And one of the main topics of this meeting was precisely the impact of diabetes on sex, both men and women.

Cedrés presented research conducted at the Medical Center Sexological Plenus, which he directs, in which he found that diabetic men have a chance “four times more likely to have erectile dysfunction, and diabetic women a chance” three times to experience low in vaginal lubrication. ”

The study was done among 140 patients (70 men and 70 women) between 40 and 60 and treated for type II diabetes. In the course of five months of work, Cedrés found that “all patients” some type of sexual dysfunction, either loss of sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, loss of lubrication, less testosterone than expected for age and anorgasmia. And these failures were linked to the disease.

Cedrés told voanoticias.com types of dysfunction that causes diabetes:

1. In women, impaired blood glucose predisposes to have more vaginal infections. And down infections vaginal lubrication. “That’s when you see the painful intercourse, pain at the time of penetration, and this brings the anorgasmia, or inability to achieve orgasm.”

2. Both men and women, diabetes affects the secretion of sex hormones. In the case of men, especially low testosterone secretion, Cedrés said. “The secret man testosterone in the testis. And to get more blood glucose than it should, down the functions of testosterone secretion, and this causes andropause, the male analog of the female menopause. A low level of testosterone affects sexual desire and erection in men. And in the case of women, affects sexual desire and vaginal lubrication. ”

3. Diabetes also causes vascular abnormalities. “The disease is clogging the arteries of the body, which is why diabetics are at risk of heart attacks. And when they clog arteries of the male genitalia, they are filled with less blood and erectile dysfunction occurs, “he said. In women, meanwhile, vascular abnormalities “are not predominant.”

4. Both men and women, diabetes causes a loss of endothelial function, which is the lining inside blood vessels in the body. “In sexuality, in particular, the loss of endothelial function affects the genital vessels. In men, erectile function worse and worse lubrication women. ”

5. Diabetes affects the patients to psycho-emotional level and this, in turn, affects their sexuality. “They have a chronic illness that requires them to adhere to treatment, both those who take insulin and those not. So many times, they feel handicapped and are afraid of death. This positions them in a very vulnerable. ”

While it is not easy for a diabetic to digest all this information must be educated if you want to solve their sexual problems, said Cedrés.

“In the course of the study we saw an amazing sexual illiteracy,” he said. “Many diabetes patients are not associated with sexual problems. Came to the center thinking it was a matter of the couple, stress, or because they thought it was normal to have sexual dysfunction to their age. ” False beliefs should be demolished. How? By appropriate treatment.

While the person with diabetes treatment is “more intense, more complex, and sometimes the response rate is slower, gives results as Cedrés. With patients, working both organic and psychological problems. The administration of drugs that improve vascular function and endothelial function, the application of hormones, treatment of vaginal infections and couples therapy are some of the tools he put into practice.

But before sexological treatment, the patient must control his diabetes, said Cedrés. “Exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, diet and care strictly adhere to medical control.”

Finally, diabetics and their partners should understand that they are not guilty of dysfunction: “It’s not that your body does not function, or that your partner does not want and that does not respond. It is the manifestation of a metabolic disease, “said the Uruguayan doctor.

In a long term researcher at the University of Toronto in Canada have found that girls with type 1 diabetes more prone to eating disorders. An eating disorder in combination with diabetes is particularly dangerous.

In the Canadian study, 101 girls participated with diabetes who were old when 9 to 13 years. The girls were interviewed over a period of five years in academic interviews to their eating habits. They were also weighed and measured on these dates to determine their Body Mass Index (BMI). At the beginning none of the girls had signs of eating disorders. During the study, however, 45 participants developed a clinically relevant eating disorder.

A lethal combination
The long-term study in Toronto showed that the 45 participants who had developed an eating disorder in the course of the study were already in previous years, mentally striking. Most study participants had suffered one to two years before the start of the eating disorder is already having a depression. During puberty, changing body and mind strong. The normal psychological stress of these changes, subjects experienced as a threat. Weight and shape for these girls were the determining factor in their self-esteem.

The deadly road to dream figure
Since insulin is decried as “fattening hormone” to inject some Type 1 diabetics intentionally too little insulin in order to be able to rapidly decrease. Frequent vomiting, excessive exercise or fasting insulin at the same dose can result in severe hypoglycemia. To counteract the dangerous excesses of disturbed eating behavior in young women and girls, adolescents with diabetes need a loving care and should be encouraged even before puberty, in a self-conscious body awareness. Parents should question the diets or nutritional experiments of their daughters who are not medically necessary, urgent, and if in doubt, seek professional help. Clinically significant eating disorders often arise from a degenerate diet.

As your pregnancy progresses your doctor or midwife you will become a series of tests and exams to determine if everything is progressing well and whether you’re developing a complication that can put you or your baby at risk.

Although these diseases are rare, it is best to diagnose a good time to try to do everything possible to make your pregnancy reaches a successful conclusion.

About five percent of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes and although the figure is not very high, doctors usually make frequent glucose testing expectant mothers. For those diagnosed with this illness can be controlled with a good diet and exercise, pregnancy will end well.

Placenta previa is another of the complications of pregnancy and in it the placenta that surrounds the baby is lower in the normal uterus, right next to or covering the cervix. This condition occurs in about one in a hundred pregnancies, so the chances of developing it are not very high, but should be alert.

Placenta previa usually not a problem at the beginning of pregnancy, but if it continues in coming quarters may cause bleeding, so you can take the decision to bring forward the date of delivery. The location of your placenta will be reviewed during the ultrasound in the middle of your pregnancy, but very few women who have placenta previa at this stage of your state maintained until delivery. But if you go with it, the only option is to give birth by Caesarean section.

Gestational diabetes is a specific disorder that occurs during pregnancy, which is distinguished by an increase in blood glucose, among other conditions, but that after birth the baby and usually disappears during the postpartum period.

This is because during pregnancy the placenta produces hormones such as estrogen, cortisol and lactogen, which can block the work of insulin, which is responsible for regulating blood glucose. When gestational diabetes is not treated, can cause severe consequences on the health of the pregnant woman and baby, one of the most common infections are usually in the urinary tract.

You may also see preeclampsia, which is characterized by increased high blood pressure and a lot of fluid retention which can interfere with the development of the sick baby and the mom. A characteristic of babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes, is that they can grow so much and weigh more than 4 kg which is called (macrosomia), which can complicate delivery, and require much more effort the mother.

You can give these babies born with respiratory failure, poor lung development, which then has for some time in the neonatal intensive care unit until they can breathe on their own. Therefore it is necessary that the mother make the appropriate checks and if you detect gestational diabetes, observed to the letter the instructions of their doctors.

Swelling of the foot that can be acute or mild, increasing the temperature in the area, redness of the foot, dry skin area. Unfortunately, many people do not pay attention to these signals and wait until the fifth symptom appears: destruction and structural change of the foot that is very evident as it looks shorter and wider.

When a person has these conditions and not treated on time, your foot takes the form of a rocking chair, the arc disappears and the joints are destroyed, making it incapable of performing the most basic tasks.

Depending on the severity of injuries, the doctor will determine the treatment, but the main thing will be to prevent the occurrence of further injury, so it can be used to put plaster, crutches or wheelchairs or permanently total rest in bed.

If the injury is severe enough, will have to wear special shoes for the foot that made the deformity. Despite the foot and can not be returned to its original state, often the patient underwent surgery to fuse the broken joints or remove bumps, both are the more encouraging picture, because in most cases it is necessary resorting to amputation and save the patient’s life.

Acute complication of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus endangers the patient’s life and is characterized by urinary loss of water, potassium, ammonium and sodium in hypovolemia, electrolyte imbalance, very important elevation of blood glucose levels and degradation free fatty acids. This determines a state of acidosis which is often accompanied by coma.

It occurs with a frequency of 4-8 cases per 1000 diabetics per year, from 20% to 30% of cases occur in those who present with the disease. It occurs more frequently in type I diabetics and adults, typically between the youngest (28-38 years), with no predilection for any sex.

CLINICAL
Although the symptoms of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus may be present from several days earlier, the metabolic alterations typical of CAD usually develop quickly (usually within 24 hours).
The clinical picture includes a history of polyuria, polydipsia, weight loss, nausea, vomiting and decreased appetite. This anorexia relative importance as the first manifestation of the transition from simple hyperglycemia ketosis. Occasionally appears in the adult abdominal pain (more common in children)

COMPLICATIONS
The most common complications of DKA include: 1) hypoglycemia due to excessive treatment with insulin, 2) hypokalemia: caused by insulin administration and treatment of acidosis with bicarbonate and 3) hyperglycemia: secondary to insufficient insulin treatment (The first two have been significantly reduced with the use of low doses of insulin).
Cerebral edema is a rare but almost always fatal. The asymptomatic is not uncommon among children and young adults is extremely rare, while the development of symptoms in adults. Disease characterized by impairment of consciousness and headache, seizures can occur, changes in the lungs, respiratory arrest and bradycardia (symptoms and signs progress as if there was a herniation). Some patients have warning signs (headache of sudden onset or rapid decrease in level of consciousness), but in others the initial manifestation is respiratory arrest. Mortality is high (> 70%). Hyperventilation have been used, steroids and mannitol, but tend to be ineffective after respiratory arrest.

TREATMENT
The treatment is urgent and immediate, and has two main objectives:
1) correction of dehydration and
2) correction of hyperglycemia.

The information I have placed here is to create a little awareness about the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of regular checkups because this complication usually occurs in uncontrolled diabetes (patients not taking their medications and do not meet your diet or people who did not know they had diabetes)

Spending time on the feet is very important, especially for people with diabetes, as a small lesion may trigger the amputation of the foot and even leg.

Charcot foot is just one of many injuries that can present in patients with diabetes, mainly due to the lack of control leads to loss of sensitivity of the lower extremities.

But what is the Charcot foot?

Every day our feet are exposed to long hours of walking, we can all experience injury, however, when a person has feeling in your legs, stop walking when you feel pain, in the case of a person with diabetes, you already have deficit sensitivity in the area, continue walking, intensifying the injury with the possible destruction of bone and joints, this is what is called Charcot foot.

In other words, the Charcot foot is a complex deformity of the foot, a complication seen as progressive, slow, chronic, painless and occurs in one or more joints due to neurological deficit, such as neuropathy.

It develops as a result of loss of sensation in the feet because the nerves are affected and because of a broken bone that is not detected due to lack of sensation. This evil advances and there is destruction of the soft tissues of the foot.

Without feeling pain, fracture patient continues to make daily life with the broken bone deteriorating medical condition, for which, in most cases only remains the possibility of amputation.

In other cases, joint destruction is severe enough to cause permanent deformities in the foot with bony protrusions. This condition requires special footwear forever.

People with diabetes are more prone to foot problems. Diabetes can cause nerve damage, which means you can not feel a foot injury until a large sore or infection. Diabetes can also damage blood vessels.

Furthermore, diabetes affects the body’s immune system, decreasing the ability to fight infection. Small infections can worsen quickly and cause the death of the skin and other tissues, which may require amputation.

To prevent injury to the feet, inspect them and take care of them daily.

The self refers to being capable of self blood glucose checked at home. Also called self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG by its acronym in English). Regular self-testing blood sugar tells you and your doctor how well is working diet, exercise and medication for diabetes.

A device called a glucometer can provide an exact blood sugar reading. There are different types of devices. Usually, you prick your finger with a small needle called a lancet to get a tiny drop of blood. You place the blood onto a test strip and put the strip on the device. Results are available within 30 to 45 seconds.

A doctor or diabetes educator will help you schedule an appropriate time to be tested. The doctor will help you set goals for blood glucose.
Most people with type 2 diabetes need to check your blood sugar only once or twice daily.
If blood glucose levels are under control, you may just need to check them a few times a week.
Tests can be done when you wake up, before meals and at bedtime. It may require more frequent testing when you’re ill or under stress.

The test results can be used to adjust meals, activity, or medications to keep blood glucose levels within an appropriate range. The tests identify high and low blood sugar levels before serious problems develop.

Maintain a record for you and your doctor. This will be a great help if you are having trouble controlling their diabetes.

A flu is very tiring for everyone. And if you have diabetes type 1 or type 2, is not only annoying, but until it can be complicated. When you have diabetes and flu, need special care.

For people with diabetes, type 1 or type 2, having a cold or flu is something that can be much more complicated than for other people. The flu and colds include symptoms that can interfere with your diabetes management, and medications to treat these diseases, too.

Influenza affects different aspects of diabetes are:

* Influenza or flu can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia. People with diabetes are three times more likely to die from this type of respiratory illness than those without diabetes.
* When your body suffers the stress of a disease, creates many ketones, a residue that means your body is not using glucose properly. This is especially true for people who have type 1 diabetes.
* Many times the flu and colds, it can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, which make your glucose levels to rise.
* If you get dehydrated because they eat well, do not drink enough fluids or as a result of diarrhea and vomiting, your glucose levels will drop too.
* Some prescription medicines contain sugar, which leads to increased levels of glucose in your blood.
* Infections can make your blood glucose, rise.

Insurance questions : what medications you take in these cases?

If you notice, most cold medicines are in the pharmacy that they say “not suitable for diabetics. This is either because a lot of sugar that can be harmful or because they have other contraindications. Do not buy OTC drugs without knowing if they are good for you. First check with your doctor.

For the treatment of your flu, you also need rest and drink plenty of fluids. You should also monitor your glucose levels frequently to make sure you are not getting too high, or if so, be prepared (a) to act.

The main thing is to meet with your doctor so that the two create a “plan for when you get sick and you take the days as are necessary to recover. That way, you can set a fixed time to eat, you stay hydrated (a), drink water at least every hour, monitor your blood glucose regularly and take your temperature. Do not stop your diabetes medicines unless your doctor says it recommends.

If you have diabetes and flu or cold you should call your doctor if, your blood glucose levels are above 180 mg / dL, your blood glucose levels are below 70 mg / dL, vomit everything you eat or drink and have diarrhea, your temperature is above 101 degrees Fahrenheit or 38.3 degrees Celsius.

Finally we continue to recommend the best treatment for the prevention of influenza vaccine against influenza (flu). It’s the best way to prevent complications for people with diabetes as for those who suffer from this disease.
