Old people get along better with their diabetes, if someone talks to them about it. That’s the least a result of a new study on the behavior of older patients in the diabetes therapy.

Who’s with over 85 years, suffering from “Age of sugar”, ie type 2 diabetes must adjust himself: From now own, the blood sugar measured and supplied to tablets or insulin. In the diabetes therapy has a high degree of personal responsibility a top priority. However, this ownership is not always so great, like how the doctors. Finally, a type-2 diabetes, even once causes no pain. The initial question to a new study on age and diabetes was therefore: How can I improve the self-motivation of the elderly in their diabetes care?

A doctor explains better than a piece of paper
The researchers evaluated data for the study, the blood of two groups of patients: one group was maintained regularly and very closely. The other group was supported only by a booklet in which the most important thing was listed for diabetes therapy. The result: The patient group that was closely supervised, was much easier to cope with their diabetes therapy than those who had only received a brochure. Gerontologists (old physician), this result is not surprising. At the age of diabetes is often not the main problem, but the social and psychological situation of the people. In other words, who is often alone and can not well employ is not much energy on the diabetes therapy. Another problem is the physical condition of old diabetics: Who can not see well or have shaky hands, it can be difficult even to make blood glucose measurements, or medication dosage. Here at retirement homes, elderly diabetic patients, nurses or family members are instructed.

Motivation by strengthening human
But who even beyond the 80 is still fit enough to control his diabetes itself, and it still does not, often feels alone. The disease can then either be used as a means to improve the social situation of repeated hospital visits. Other old people ignore the disease simply because they believe that one should always refrain diabetes for sweets. Education, encouragement and understanding to the study results seem, therefore, more of distress as the only technically competent information.
