Higher Cardiovascular Mortality than Healthy Population

The physical health of people with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder is worse than that of the healthy population. People affected by this group of diseases have an increased cardiovascular mortality, attributed to a risk from 1 to 5 times higher than present modifiable coronary risk factors such as obesity, smoking, diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Specifically, in the case of schizophrenia life expectancy is shortened by up to ten years.

This is one of the main conclusions of consensus “Cardiovascular disease and diabetes in people with severe mental illness, which in Spain is supported by the Spanish Society of Biological Psychiatry, together with the Spanish Society of Psychiatry, the Spanish Society of Diabetes and Spanish Society of Cardiology.

Pregnancy in Diabetic Women

Hypoglycemia: Hypoglycemia is common in the first half of pregnancy, especially in the first quarter. Fortunately, the fetus tolerates well hypoglycemia.

Retinopathy (damage to the retina) retinopathy is already present in many women in early pregnancy, and may progress as it moves. Regular ophthalmoscopy is therefore important. Paradoxically, the progression of retinopathy may be related to the initiation of a strict metabolic control. When neovascularization occurs, can be controlled with photocoagulation, and it is therefore an indication for abortion.

Nephropathy (kidney damage): diabetic nephropathy in pregnant women is defined as the presence during the first half of pregnancy, proteinuria (protein in urine), persistent over 400 mg in 24 hours, in the absence of infection.

Cardiovascular diseases are one of the most frequent consequence of diseases in diabetics. The Diabetes draws an altered metabolic process by itself, which can lead to that narrow the coronary arteries as a result of deposits in the course of the disease. Because of the increased blood glucose levels, the risk of vasoconstriction in diabetic patients is generally four to six times higher than in non-diabetics. These side effects of the disease are responsible for many heart attacks.
